APM Lagos Calls for Comprehensive Reforms in LASTMA Operations, Deployment of Body Camera

The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, has called for comprehensive reforms in the operations of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, to enhance transparency, professionalism, and accountability in traffic enforcement across the state.
The party made the call in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, expressing concern over what it described as the increasing complaints by motorists and other road users regarding the conduct of some LASTMA personnel.
According to the statement, while the party recognizes the vital role of LASTMA in traffic management and road safety, reports of reckless enforcement activities, indiscriminate arrests for minor traffic violations, and confrontations between officers and motorists have become a growing source of concern.
The APM noted that some enforcement actions have allegedly contributed to avoidable road accidents and endangered the lives of innocent passengers, stressing that no traffic enforcement operation should compromise public safety.
The party advocated the immediate deployment of body cameras for all LASTMA officers on duty, saying the devices would promote transparency, provide objective records of interactions between traffic officials and motorists, discourage misconduct, and improve public confidence in the agency.
It further recommended strict regulations to prevent officers from tampering with or deactivating the cameras during official duty hours except under authorized circumstances.
The party also called for the complete digitalization of LASTMA’s enforcement and administrative processes, including the handling of traffic violations, penalties, documentation, and incident reporting.
According to APM, the adoption of transparent digital platforms would reduce human interference, minimize opportunities for corruption, and improve service delivery.
The party maintained that as a modern megacity, Lagos should embrace technology-driven traffic management solutions that protect both road users and enforcement personnel while promoting accountability, professionalism, and respect for human dignity.
APM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies aimed at improving governance, strengthening public institutions, and ensuring that government agencies operate in the best interests of the people.
