OYRTMA Partners PMS, Police, Religious Leaders to Curb Ember Months Crashes

…As Statewide campaign targets zero fatalities as agency intensifies traffic safety awareness ahead of festive season

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has announced a comprehensive, decentralised road safety campaign across the state, targeting zero road fatalities during the 2026 festive season.

The Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), disclosed this at the agency’s 2026 media pre-briefing held at the Oyo State Secretariat, Ibadan, with the theme, “Safe Road, Safe Life, Drive Responsibly.”

Adekoya identified speeding, driving against traffic, drunk driving, overloading and the use of mobile phones while driving as major causes of road crashes during the Ember Months, stressing the need for increased public awareness and strict compliance with traffic regulations.

He said the agency would collaborate with religious leaders to promote road safety, adding that safety messages would be incorporated into sermons during Friday Jumat services and Sunday church services.

The OYRTMA chairman announced that the statewide campaign would commence on Monday, November 2, 2026, with a road walk, followed by sustained sensitisation activities across the state until January 2027.

He added that the agency would work with the Park Management System (PMS), Nigeria Police Force, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and other law enforcement agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to traffic management and enforcement.

Speaking on behalf of the PMS Chairman in Oyo State, the Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Tajudeen, urged motorists, commercial drivers, transport operators and passengers to support the initiative by obeying traffic laws and adopting responsible road-use practices.

The campaign is aimed at reducing road crashes, protecting lives and ensuring safer journeys for residents and travellers throughout the festive period.
