Oyo/Osun Customs Seizes N3.22bn Worth of Contraband, Generates N28.5bn Revenue in Three Months
…Smuggled rice, drugs, vehicles among seized items
…Intercepts three pump-action rifles, arrests three suspects
The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of contraband goods with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N3.22 billion and the generation of N28.5 billion in revenue between March and May 2026.
Speaking during a press briefing in Ibadan today, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Acting Comptroller Wale Adewole, said the achievements were made possible through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies, and the commitment of officers and men of the Command.
According to Adewole, the seized items include 1,537 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 102 bales and 13 sacks of used clothing, 56 sacks of used shoes, 1,105 used tyres, 462 used compressors, 106 bags of sugar, foreign spaghetti and macaroni, foreign vegetables, cannabis sativa, tramadol, pharmaceuticals, premium motor spirit (PMS), and several smuggled vehicles.
The Customs boss disclosed that three pump-action rifles were also intercepted during anti-smuggling operations.
He revealed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the firearms seizure and are currently under investigation.
Adewale added that the Command is collaborating with the Customs Intelligence Unit, Customs Police Unit, and Legal Unit to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attempted smuggling and prosecute those involved.
The Custom boss further disclosed that the Command, in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, apprehended a suspect accused of impersonating officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and defrauding members of the public with false promises of securing employment into the Service in exchange for money.
He reiterated that recruitment into the Nigeria Customs Service is transparent, merit-based, and conducted strictly through approved channels, warning members of the public against falling victim to fraudsters.
The Acting Controller stated that the total Duty Paid Value of all seizures made during the period under review stood at N3,221,843,672, noting that the interceptions helped protect the nation’s economy, support local industries, improve public safety, and curb the activities of criminal elements.
On revenue generation, Adewole said the Command collected N28,503,393,802.75 between March and May 2026, representing an 8 per cent increase over the N26,233,796,496.57 generated during the corresponding period in 2025.
He attributed the revenue growth to the dedication of Customs personnel and the cooperation of compliant stakeholders within the trading community, assuring that the Command would continue efforts to block revenue leakages and maximize government earnings.
As part of activities marking the occasion, the Command also presented commendation awards to outstanding officers and men in recognition of their professionalism, dedication, and exceptional service delivery.
Adewole expressed appreciation to stakeholders, sister security agencies, the business community, and the media for their continued support and partnership, pledging that the Oyo/Osun Area Command would remain committed to combating smuggling, facilitating legitimate trade, and enhancing national security.
