Oyo Police Crack Down on Alleged Cyberbullying Against Taye Currency
…As Command insists due process followed, warns against misinformation
Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect over allegations of cyberbullying, defamation, and threat to life following a petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday April 29, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command said the case involves allegations made by musician Adebisi Taye Akande, popularly known as Taye Currency, against Afunso Ridwan Abiola, also known as Rolex Dee.According to the police, the petition alleged that the suspect engaged in sustained cyberbullying and defamatory statements against the complainant across multiple social media platforms.
The complaint further claimed that the suspect had previously received financial support of ₦800,000 from the musician to promote his career but later made disparaging remarks capable of damaging the complainant’s reputation.
Police also noted that the suspect allegedly made additional defamatory statements during a public programme known as “Agbaletu,” which later circulated widely on social media.
Following investigations and technical intelligence, the suspect was tracked and apprehended in Lagos before being taken into custody for further investigation.
The Command, however, dismissed reports circulating on some online platforms alleging unlawful detention of the suspect by its Anti-Cultism Unit, describing the claims as false and misleading.
It stated that the suspect is being held in lawful custody and that all procedures followed comply with established legal standards.
The police urged the public to disregard unverified reports and advised media organisations to ensure proper fact-checking before publication.
Reiterating its commitment to justice and professionalism, the Command assured that due process would be followed and the rights of all parties protected.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, called on residents to remain law-abiding, assuring that justice would take its course.
