Motorcyclist Dies After Police Encounter in Moniya, Ibadan, Officers Arrested

Oyo State Police Command has begun an investigation into the death of a 35-year-old motorcyclist, Sanni Salisu, following an incident at the Moniya area of Ibadan.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred on April 24 at about 11:00 a.m.
While Preliminary findings indicate that two police officers attached to the Kara Police Outpost were allegedly carrying out an unauthorized stop-and-search operation when they intercepted the deceased, an okada rider.
During the encounter, Salisu reportedly developed what appeared to be an epileptic seizure, slumped on his motorcycle, and became unresponsive.
The officers were said to have immediately rushed him to Modupe Hospital in Akinyele, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The incident sparked tension in the area, as some aggrieved residents, acting on unverified information, attacked the Kara Police Outpost and set parts of the facility ablaze.
During the unrest, three motorcycles and a Mazda pick-up patrol vehicle were destroyed, while a police officer sustained severe burns.
Police authorities said reinforcements were swiftly deployed to the scene, restoring law and order.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital Mortuary in Ibadan for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, has ordered the immediate arrest of the officers involved, the officers are currently in custody as investigations continue.
He also directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough probe into the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The Command cautioned against the spread of misinformation on social media, urging the public to rely on official sources for accurate updates.
Reaffirming its stance on discipline, the police emphasized that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, assuring that justice will be served as investigations progress.
