2027: NUJ Oyo Urges Politicians to Shun Blackmail, Character Assassination, maintain Issue-Based Campaigns
…Warns journalists against attending political events at unofficial venues
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has appealed to politicians and political actors to embrace clean and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Union also urged political actors to shun blackmail, character assassination and cyberbullying during the electioneering period.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued and signed by the Secretary of the union, Comrade Temidayo Adu, at the end of the Union’s monthly Congress held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Abib Olamitoye Hall of the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The Congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Mr. Akeem Abas, urged journalists across the state to maintain a high level of security consciousness before, during and after the 2027 elections.
It specifically warned members against attending press conferences or official engagements organised at undesignated or unofficial venues, stressing the need to prioritise their personal safety.
The NUJ also admonished journalists to remain professional, objective and non-partisan in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
To further ensure the safety of journalists as political activities intensify, the Union urged politicians and political parties to use the NUJ Press Centre for media briefings and press conferences.
The Congress expressed concern over the increasing spread of fake news, misinformation and unverified content, particularly across social media platforms.
It therefore called for effective enforcement of existing cyber laws to curb the spread of false information capable of causing public panic, social unrest and security breaches.
The Union also urged security agencies to develop robust and proactive strategies to address public safety concerns throughout the electioneering and election periods.
Meanwhile, the NUJ called on proprietors of media organisations to provide comprehensive insurance coverage for journalists deployed to cover political campaigns and elections.
The Congress said such measures would help guarantee the safety and peace of mind of journalists performing their professional duties during the electoral process.
