APM Lagos Endorses Makinde as Consensus Candidate for United Opposition in 2027
…Urges opposition parties to unite behind the Oyo governor, vows grassroots mobilisation across Lagos ahead of the 2027 election
The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) has endorsed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the most suitable consensus candidate to lead a united opposition coalition in the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, APM Lagos said its position followed ongoing consultations among opposition leaders ahead of a proposed national summit to produce a single presidential candidate.
The party maintained that its endorsement of Governor Makinde was based on what it described as his leadership qualities, competence, performance in office and national acceptability rather than political sentiment or convenience.
According to the statement, Makinde has built a reputation for prudent and transparent governance, citing investments in road infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and security in Oyo State, as well as improvements in fiscal management and economic growth under his administration.
APM Lagos argued that Nigeria requires a leader with practical governance experience capable of addressing the country’s economic challenges, rising inflation, unemployment and insecurity through responsible management of public resources and strategic planning.
The party also described Governor Makinde as a bridge-builder with broad national appeal, saying he enjoys goodwill across political divides and maintains cordial relationships with leaders from different regions of the country.
It further stated that Makinde’s calm disposition, consensus-building approach and executive experience make him well-positioned to unite the opposition and attract nationwide support ahead of the 2027 general election.
On its role in the emerging coalition, APM Lagos said it was strengthening grassroots structures across the state to support the opposition’s electoral efforts.
The party disclosed that its Lagos State governorship candidate, Prince Laja Adeoye, is coordinating a mobilisation framework aimed at contributing more than five million votes to the coalition’s presidential campaign across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
According to the statement, the strategy includes strengthening polling unit structures, expanding volunteer networks, encouraging voter registration and Permanent Voter Card collection, deploying digital campaign platforms, training election agents and engaging community organisations, transport unions, market associations and faith-based groups.
APM Lagos described Lagos as a critical electoral battleground with nearly eight million registered voters, stressing that maximising voter turnout in the state would be crucial to the success of any opposition coalition seeking victory in the 2027 presidential election.
The party called on opposition political parties, civil society organisations, youth groups and Nigerians to place national interest above personal ambition, insisting that a united opposition is necessary to provide what it described as a credible alternative for the country.
