Oyo PDP Accuses APC of Hypocrisy, Defends Makinde Over Controversy

The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of hypocrisy, historical revisionism, and attempting to silence Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
This was in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Michael Ogunsina, the PDP described the APC’s recent remarks as “disingenuous” and reflective of “political amnesia, selective morality, and intellectual dishonesty.”
The PDP argued that the ruling party could not rewrite history to suit its current political position, referenced past statements made by key APC figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, during their years in opposition.
According to Oyo State Chapter of the PDP, Tinubu, while in opposition, adopted strong and confrontational rhetoric, encouraging political resistance and mobilization.
Similarly, Buhari was said to have issued firm warnings regarding electoral outcomes, statements the PDP claims contributed to heightened political engagement at the time.
The party maintained that these examples contradict the APC’s current stance and make its criticism of Makinde “the height of hypocrisy.”
Defending the governor, the PDP stated that Makinde merely referenced historical events as a caution against political intolerance and did not incite violence.
It added that such references are consistent with democratic discourse and should not be misinterpreted.
The statement further accused the APC of exhibiting increasing intolerance toward dissenting voices while attempting to “sanitize its own political past.”
It described the party’s reaction as a sign of “political anxiety” amid growing public dissatisfaction and economic challenges under the current administration.
The PDP also warned against what it called attempts to create “manufactured controversy” around opposition figures, insisting that Nigerians are aware of such patterns.
Reaffirming its stance on democratic values, the party emphasized that democracy must allow diverse opinions and robust debate, rather than suppress opposing views.
The PDP further stated that Governor Makinde remains committed to democratic principles, responsible governance, and political maturity, despite what it described as coordinated efforts to undermine him.
