Makinde’s wife urges stakeholders to synergise with community, religious leaders to rise against FGM
The wife of Oyo state governor, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde has called on stakeholders to engage community leaders, religious leaders and policy-makers to create constructive policies by promoting positive change and fairness for the well-being of girl child and to fight against female genital mutilation in the state.
The call was was made at the commemoration of International day for zero tolerance for female genital mutilation held at Oyo state government house, Agodi, Ibadan.
Mrs Makinde explained that women and girl child do not need to go through the complication of severe pain, excessive bleeding, genital tissue swelling, urine infection and death that associated with genital mutilation.
She further charged stakeholders to speak-up against female genital mutilation for the well-being of the girl child.
In her remark, the Commissioner for women affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun explained the effect of female genital mutilation which could cause infections, problem associated with child birth, psychological trauma and called on all and sundry to fight against the menace of female genital mutilation.
Some of the female genital mutilation survivors who spoke to National Daily news at the event lamented that female genital mutilation has make them loss their marriages and turned them to single mothers due to lack of enjoyment during sex.
They called on government to make a policy that will put an end to the menace.
