WABU Welterweight Showdown: Aboderin Lauds Ghana, Nigeria Boxers

From Ogundele Olanrewaju

President of the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU), Mr. Remi Aboderin, has lauded the boxers Nigerian Taye Olowu and his opponent from Ghana Justice Addy that battled for the West African Boxing Union welterweight title at boxing show recently organized in Lagos by Saleh Gloves Promotions.

Although Nigeria’s Taiwo ‘Gentle Boy’ Olowu secured a round three knockout in the action packed bout, the Ghanaian, Justice Addy still got a commendation from the WABU President who sanctioned and supervised the bout for a brilliant performance.

Aboderin, who is also the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), also thumped up Saleh Fawaz, the promoter of the first boxing show to be held at the beach, Moist Beach, Oniru Private Beach, Lagos for a well organized show.

He explained that the infrequency of boxing promotions locally was what was responsible for the reduction of the chances of our boxers getting big fights, thereby robbing them of the opportunity to have the number of fights required to take shots at continental, Commonwealth and world titles.

The WABU boss noted that Ghanaian boxers, who usually have a higher number of fights than their Nigerian counterparts of the same age and profile, have been benefiting from the regularity of promotions in their country.

“But now things have changed with big sponsors such as Multichoice that sponsoring GOtv Boxing Night which is the most regular platform on which our professional boxers get to fight because it holds every three months or thereabouts, and there are other promoters in Lagos and Ibadan doing regular shows.
