Alli Urges Makinde TO Domesticate Tax Harmonisation Law, Vows Passage Within 100 Days If Elected
The Oyo State Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to expedite action on the passage of the Tax Harmonisation Law in the state to address the alleged cases of multiple taxation, illegal levies and extortion.
Alli expressed concern over what he described as the state government’s failure to demonstrate commitment to domesticating the legislation, despite growing complaints from farmers, traders and business owners over alleged illegal revenue collections along major roads in the state.
This was in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Sen. Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation, Bisi Oladele, the APC governorship candidate alleged that some non-state actors, parading themselves as revenue agents, had continued to harass and extort farmers transporting agricultural produce from Oyo North to Ibadan.
He also alleged that business owners conveying goods from Ibadan to other parts of the state were being subjected to multiple levies at different roadblocks, a development he said was increasing the cost of commodities and reducing the profit margins of small-scale businesses.
Alli maintained that the people of Oyo State deserved a transparent and coordinated tax administration system that would protect farmers, transporters, traders and consumers from arbitrary taxation and unauthorised revenue collectors.
He explained that the Tax Harmonisation Law was designed to streamline tax collections across states and local government areas, eliminate multiple taxation and curb the activities of illegal tax collectors operating under the guise of revenue agents.
The APC candidate further regretted that Oyo State had yet to domesticate the legislation, claiming that several other states had either passed the law or were making efforts to conclude the legislative process.
Alli, however, assured residents that if elected governor in 2027, his administration would ensure the passage of the Tax Harmonisation Law within its first 100 days in office.
He said his proposed tax policy would focus on protecting businesses, encouraging economic activities and creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth and prosperity in Oyo State.
