World Environment Week: Oyo Calls for Collective Action on Environmental Protection, Climate Sustainability

…As Govt warns against environmental degradation, calls for collective responsibility in preserving nature

The Oyo State Government has called on residents, businesses and stakeholders to take active responsibility for environmental protection and restoration, stressing that safeguarding nature is a collective duty crucial to securing a sustainable future.

Speaking at the 2026 World Environment Week celebration themed “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,” the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, urged citizens to adopt environmentally responsible practices and be mindful of the impact of their actions on the ecosystem.

Aderinto emphasized that environmental degradation, poor waste disposal and climate change pose significant threats to public health, economic growth and sustainable development.

He noted that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to the spread of diseases and could discourage potential investors from doing business in the state.

The commissioner also cautioned industries against activities that negatively impact the environment and climate, urging operators to embrace sustainable practices.

Aderinto announced that the state had successfully flagged off the planting of one million trees as part of efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental conservation.

He further appreciated individuals, organizations and development partners supporting the state’s environmental preservation initiatives.

In his goodwill message, Chairman of the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority, Hon. Adeniyi Akanbi, described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the urgent need to tackle pollution and embrace sustainable lifestyles.

He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to improving waste management, promoting recycling and encouraging responsible environmental practices among residents.

Also speaking, Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Agency, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (Rtd), represented by the agency’s Secretary, Mrs. Olajumoke Yusuf, stressed that environmental protection requires the support of residents, local governments and other stakeholders.

She pledged the agency’s continued collaboration with relevant bodies to advance environmental responsibility, public safety and sustainable development across the state.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola, represented by Mr. Oladokun Olatunde, called on schools, teachers, students and community leaders to champion environmental sustainability through education, innovation and responsible environmental management.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, represented by Mr. Olabamidele Oluwadamilare, urged residents to protect natural resources and work together to create a healthier environment for present and future generations.

The event featured stakeholders from various sectors who reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Oyo State Government’s efforts toward building a cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient society.
