Oyo Govt, Security Agencies Clamp Down on Illegal Fuel Trading Along Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), in collaboration with several security agencies, has carried out a major enforcement operation to remove illegal fuel traders operating around the Toll Gate axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
During the operation, officials discovered and confiscated large quantities of petroleum products that were being stored illegally.
The exercise was led by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, CP Sunday Odukoya (Rtd.), and the Executive Adviser to the Governor on Rule of Law Enforcement, CP Sonubi Ayodele Olufemi (Rtd.). Also present were the Chairman of the Environmental Task Force, DCP Francis Ojomo, and the Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, Iyabode Akinbode Esq.
The operation was aimed at stopping the unlawful trading and storage of petroleum products and improving safety along the busy highway.
Officials discovered several litres of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and diesel stored in 25-litre kegs and large drums. Numerous empty barrels and containers used for the illegal storage and sale of fuel were also found at the location.
All recovered items were seized, while empty containers were destroyed on site.
CP Odukoya and CP Sonubi strongly condemned the activities of illegal fuel traders, stressing that the Oyo State Government will not tolerate practices that endanger public safety and harm the environment.
The OYRLEA has directed the owners of the seized items to report to its office within seven days for proper identification and documentation, failing which the items will be forfeited to the Oyo State Government.
Although the suspected operators were not present during the operation, authorities said enforcement efforts will continue until such illegal activities are completely eradicated.
Residents and members of the public have also been advised to avoid engaging in illegal fuel trading and other criminal acts, and to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities as the state government intensifies efforts to maintain safety, order, and environmental compliance across Oyo State.
Agencies that participated in the operation include OYRTMA, the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, OYRLEA, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Oyo State Environmental Task Force, Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army.
