Oyo Police Raid Cult Gathering in Oyo Town, Three Nabbed Recovered items include an axe and a motorcycle
The Oyo State Police Command has disrupted a suspected cult meeting in Oyo town and arrested three suspected cult members, following an intelligence-led operation by its operatives.
This was revealed by Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, ina press release disclosed that the incident occurred at Bode Thomas Secondary School, Oyo, where police officers from the Atiba Division acted on credible intelligence indicating that a large group of individuals dressed in black had converged for a suspected secret cult gathering.
According to the statement, it revealed that on the arrival of the police, about 30 persons reportedly fled the scene in different directions, escaping into nearby bushes.
During the operation, three suspects were arrested, and they were identified as Jelili Taiwo Kazeem, 20; Toheeb Adediran, 25; and Ayomide Taiwo, 23.
Police investigations revealed that one of the suspects, Toheeb Adediran, is a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider who allegedly conveyed some members of the group to the location.
The statement further noted that the suspect motorcycle was recovered and taken to the police station for investigative purposes.
While being interrogated, the suspects reportedly confessed to being members of the Aiye Confraternity, stating that the gathering was organised to celebrate the birthday of one of their members while the other two suspects also allegedly admitted their involvement and disclosed their roles within the group.
A search of the area led to the recovery of one motorcycle, one axe and a black cap, items believed to be connected to the activities of the suspected cult group.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State commended the operatives of the Atiba Division for their swift response and professionalism.
He subsequently directed that the case be transferred to the State Anti-Cultism Squad for further investigation.
The statement said that the suspects are said to be cooperating with investigators and providing information to aid the arrest of other fleeing members.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command reiterated its resolve to combat cultism and violent crime, warning that the state would not be allowed to serve as a haven for criminal activities, advised Parents and guardians to caution their wards against involvement in cultism and other unlawful associations.
