Oyo Lawmakers Dismiss Claim Of Petitions On Alaafin Selection

The Lawmaker representing Atiba State Constituency, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Gbenga Oyekola and his Counterpart representing Oyo East/Oyo West, Hon Olorunpoto Cephas Rahaman, have refuted the claims flying round that the State Assembly is entertaining petitions concerning the selection of Alaafin of Oyo.

The lawmakers refuted the claims in a statement they jointly signed as members of the Oyo State House of Assembly from Oyo geopolitical zone.

According to Hon Oyekola and Hon Olorunpoto in the Statement, no such petition was received by the House on the matter.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the House only considers petitions that fall within its constitutional and statutory competencies. Matters relating to chieftaincy are already regulated by law and established administrative and traditional processes and therefore do not fall within the remit of the legislature" The Statement added.

The Oyo-born legislators maintained that, any grievances on Chieftaincy Matters should be directed to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters or the Courts of competent jurisdiction, as provided by law.

They, however, cautioned those circulating false or unconfirmed information to stop such act in the interest of peace and unity which the State is known for.
