…fuel station attendants, passersby scamper for safety

Panic broke out on Monday evening as fire engulfed a petrol filling station at the Ago-Omoluabi area of Saki, Oyo State, destroying valuable property, including a pickup van worth millions of naira.

According to eyewitnesses, thick smoke billowed into the sky, drawing the attention of residents and passersby, many of whom attempted to put out the flames before the arrival of firefighters. However, their efforts proved futile as the fire spread rapidly.

It took the swift intervention of personnel from the Oyo State Fire Service to prevent the inferno from spreading to nearby buildings and properties, thereby averting a greater disaster.

Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Fire Reform and Chairman, Fire Services Agency, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, said no life was lost in the incident.

He, however, confirmed the destruction of the filling station, a pickup van, and other valuables.

Akinwande urged members of the public to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures against fire outbreaks.

He emphasized the importance of keeping fire extinguishers in homes and business premises, especially at petrol stations where the risk of fire is high.

“We advise the public to always be conscious of fire hazards and ensure that extinguishers are available and functional, particularly in filling stations, to curb incidents at their early stages,” Akinwande stated.

He also commended the swift response of the Oyo State Fire Service, as well as the efforts of the police and other security agencies in bringing the situation under control.
