Olubadan Coronation: Makinde Reaffirms Traditional Succession System, Tinubu Hails Monarch’s Resilience

In a historic ceremony held at the iconic Mapo Hall Arcade in Ibadan, the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, formally presented the staff and instruments of office to the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I.

Governor Makinde used the occasion to affirm the sanctity of the Olubadan traditional system and succession process, declaring that all previous disputes surrounding the Ibadan chieftaincy have now been resolved.

“All challenges associated with Ibadan traditional institutions are now over and behind us,” the governor said. “The tradition, the succession, and the process are sacrosanct and must be upheld.”

The presentation was witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a rare presidential appearance at an Olubadan coronation.

Governor Makinde highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it coincided with the landing of the first wide-bodied aircraft at the newly upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Alakia, describing it as a symbolic start to a new era under Oba Ladoja’s reign.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Ladoja expressed deep appreciation to the people of Ibadanland, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the Oyo State Government for the opportunity to serve.

“This staff of office is a source of joy to all Ibadan sons and daughters,” the monarch said. “One year ago, some thought Ibadan would scatter, but we have come together in unity. I will serve every resident of Ibadan, Oyo State, Yorubaland, Nigeria, and Africa to the best of my ability.”

Oba Ladoja, who turned 81 just a day before the coronation, declared his commitment to urban renewal, promising to rebuild parts of the city that have become slums.

He also appealed to President Tinubu to consider the long-standing call for the creation of Ibadan State, urging action before May 2027.

President Tinubu praised the new Olubadan for his resilience and integrity, recalling their shared history in the Senate and Ladoja’s political trials, including his impeachment and return as governor.

“You have always stood firm and proven your reliability. May your reign bring peace and prosperity,” the president said.

Also addressing the gathering, Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal hailed Oba Ladoja’s ascension as the culmination of a journey defined by resilience and service.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Chief Ademola Ojo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, who expressed gratitude to all attendees for making the coronation a resounding success.
