Restore Ancestral Homes to Curb Social Vices, Ladoja Tells Mogaji’s

…As Olubadan-designate says strong community presence can fight drug abuse, youth restiveness

The Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has called on Mogajis (family compound heads) and community leaders in Ibadan to commit themselves to urban renewal and grassroots development, especially by revitalising the city’s ancient residential structures.

Oba Ladoja made the call over the weekend through a statement signed by the Media Aide to Olubadan-designate, Adeola Oloko while receiving hundreds of Ibadan Mogajis who paid him a congratulatory visit at his residence, Ondo Street, Bodija, Ibadan.

Addressing the traditional leaders, the monarch expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of many ancestral homes in Ibadan, urging their renovation and regular use to help preserve cultural identity and curb social vices.

“Many Mogajis are well-off and capable of initiating development projects in their family compounds,” he said.

“Unfortunately, many have chosen to reside in highbrow areas like Bodija, Oluyole, Iyaganku, Jericho, and Akobo, or even outside Ibadan and Nigeria, where life is more comfortable. Some haven’t held family meetings in years since becoming chiefs.”

He stressed that holding a chieftaincy title in Ibadan is more than an honorary recognition, describing it as a call to serve and uplift communities.

“We are looking at a situation where Mogajis and chiefs would not abandon their ancestral homes. By so doing, you can positively impact the younger generation seeking mentorship. You have achieved success in life, please, encourage others by staying connected to your roots,” Oba Ladoja added.

He noted that the restoration of neglected buildings and a visible community presence by leaders could significantly reduce issues such as drug abuse and youth restiveness.

To lead by example, the Olubadan-designate disclosed that he had personally renovated his family house at Isale Osi, which he intends to visit regularly upon ascending the throne.

Despite the concerns raised, Oba Ladoja commended the ongoing efforts of some Mogajis in providing scholarships and supporting local development initiatives. He called for greater cooperation and support from traditional leaders in his mission to restore the social and economic vibrancy of Ibadanland.

In his remarks, the leader of the Ibadan Mogajis, Chief Asimiyu Ariori, congratulated the monarch-in-waiting and praised his vision for the city. He assured Oba Ladoja of the full support and loyalty of all compound heads, praying for a long and impactful reign.
