A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, says the 2027 general elections may write a new chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
Ewenla, who is the PDP Southwest Zonal Ex-officio, made the assertion while calling on members and stakeholders of the party to remain united, disciplined and committed to the democratic process ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the reported political interest surrounding former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had continued to generate discussions among political stakeholders across the country.
The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate and later said it had submitted his name, alongside other candidates, to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Ewenla urged PDP members to strengthen the party’s structures and uphold what he described as the principles of democracy, accountability, development and good governance.
He also called for mutual respect among party members and support for candidates presented through the party’s internal processes.
According to him, the 2027 election period will test political calculations, alliances and the commitment of political actors to democratic values, stressing that Nigerians should be allowed to freely exercise their constitutional right to choose their leaders through a credible, transparent and peaceful electoral process.
The PDP chieftain said the party must focus on mobilisation, strengthening its grassroots structures and promoting the interests and welfare of Nigerians, while urging members and supporters to remain united as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Ewenla said the PDP’s message remained “Power for the People,” adding that members would continue to work towards what he described as the rescue and advancement of Nigeria through democratic participation.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the party to remain a major participant in the 2027 political process, saying history would record the choices and actions of political actors and citizens during the period.
