Olubadan Mourns In-Law, Describes Ekhaguere as Exceptional Physician

…As Monarch joins Shettima and others in paying tribute to late medical administrator

The late renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr. Felix Amasihohu Ekhaguere, has been laid to rest in Benin City, Edo State, amid glowing tributes from prominent Nigerians who celebrated his contributions to medicine, family life and humanity.

Dr. Ekhaguere, who died on June 1, 2026, at the age of 84 after a brief illness, was interred following a funeral mass held at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Mission Road, Benin.

Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Oviasogie described the deceased as a devoted Roman Catholic who was baptised at the Holy Cross Cathedral, the same church where his funeral mass was held. He noted that Dr. Ekhaguere was a member of the Knights of St. Mulumba and served as Grand Knight of the New Benin Subordinate Council, attaining the Fourth Degree of the Order.

In a tribute, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the late physician dedicated his life to the service of humanity through his medical practice. According to him, Dr. Ekhaguere brought hope to families, helped deliver countless newborns safely and earned the gratitude of generations whose lives were positively impacted by his care and professionalism.

Also paying tribute, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who described the deceased as his in-law and adopted twin brother, said Dr. Ekhaguere was an outstanding physician, distinguished public servant and accomplished medical administrator. The monarch praised his devotion to both his profession and family, noting that his values were reflected in the upbringing of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Adesuwa Ladoja, wife of his son, Muyiwa Adedamola Ladoja.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mrs. Sweet Madagwa Ekhaguere, who was married to the late doctor for 54 years, described him as a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather and dependable provider. She recalled that every January 1 marked their wedding anniversary and praised his unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of his family and those around him.

Dignitaries from various sectors attended the funeral ceremony to honour the memory of the late medical icon, whose life and legacy continue to inspire many within and beyond the medical profession.
