WHY I HAVE ACCEPTED THE CALL TO CONTEST FOR GOVERNOR |Dr. Olufemi Franklin Folahan

Politics is a strange teacher. Sometimes it gives you exactly what you ask for. Sometimes it asks whether you are prepared for something greater.

Over the past months, I have had the privilege of engaging with party leaders, community stakeholders, ward executives, youth groups, and ordinary citizens across Oyo State. My original ambition was simple: to serve my people in Ido Local Government through the Oyo State House of Assembly.

It was an honourable ambition. It remains an honourable ambition. Service does not become more noble because the office becomes larger. A good councillor is more valuable than a bad governor. A good legislator is more valuable than a bad president. Public service is measured by impact, not title. Yet politics has a way of presenting unexpected opportunities.

In recent days, I have been approached by respected stakeholders within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) regarding the possibility of contesting for the office of Governor of Oyo State in the 2027 elections. I have reflected carefully on this invitation. Not because I am intoxicated by office. Not because I believe myself destined to rule. But because every generation must decide whether it is content merely to complain about the future or willing to help shape it.

Oyo State stands at a crossroads. We are blessed with extraordinary people, strategic geography, fertile land, vibrant commerce, rich history, and immense intellectual capital. Yet despite these advantages, many of our people continue to struggle with insecurity, unemployment, failing infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and limited economic opportunities.

The challenge before us is not one of potential. It is one of organisation. The future belongs to societies that can coordinate their resources effectively, reward competence, secure their communities, and create opportunities for ordinary people to prosper. That is the conversation I wish to have with the people of Oyo State.

Not a conversation about personalities. Not a conversation about political godfathers. Not a conversation about slogans. But a conversation about governance. About security. About economic growth. About education. About infrastructure. About the kind of Oyo State we intend to leave behind for our children.

I do not pretend that the journey ahead will be easy. I do not pretend that I possess all the answers. No serious leader should. But I believe leadership begins with honesty. And the honest truth is that Oyo State can do better. Much better.

I therefore accept this invitation with humility, gratitude, and a profound sense of responsibility.
To those who supported my House of Assembly aspiration, I thank you. To those who disagreed with me, I thank you. To those who criticised me, I thank you. Politics is not a destination. It is a process of learning, growth, and service.

Today, the scale of the challenge before me has changed. But the mission has not. I remain committed to the same principles that brought me into public life: Justice. Competence. Unity. Development. And the belief that government exists to serve the people—not the other way around.

The road to 2027 begins now. May God guide our steps.
