Ewenla Faults Tinubu Administration Over Rising Debt Burden

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West, Prince Ambassador (Dr.) Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, has criticised the Federal Government over its continued borrowing under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, questioning the impact of the loans on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

In a statement made available to journalists, Ewenla expressed concern over reports that the Federal Government is seeking additional loans from the World Bank, including a recently reported $1.2 billion facility, despite existing debts already accumulated by the administration.

According to him, many Nigerians are yet to see visible improvements in critical sectors of the economy despite the level of borrowing by the government.

He noted that citizens across the country continue to face economic hardship, insecurity, unstable electricity supply, rising fuel prices, unemployment, and increasing costs of living.

Ewenla also highlighted the lack of uniformity in fuel prices across filling stations, particularly in Lagos, where he claimed petrol is being sold between ₦1,330 and ₦1,500 per litre depending on the outlet.

“The reality on the ground does not reflect the level of borrowing taking place under this administration,” he stated, adding that many families can barely afford basic necessities, while businesses are shutting down due to harsh economic conditions.

The PDP chieftain further alleged that worsening hardship in the country could make vulnerable citizens susceptible to vote-buying during elections.

He accused supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of defending the administration despite the suffering experienced by many Nigerians.

As the 2027 general elections approach, Ewenla called on Nigerians to demand accountability and question the government’s economic management and governance style.

He maintained that Nigeria deserves leadership that prioritises the welfare, security, economic stability, and dignity of its citizens.

Ewenla urged Nigerians not to ignore the current hardship in the country and insisted that the voices of the people must continue to be heard.
