PDP Chieftain Demands Urgent Reforms in Power Sector, Governance Structure

Concerns are mounting over governance and service delivery in Nigeria, with fresh criticism directed at the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration in Lagos State and at the national level.
This was in a statement, the PDP Southwest Ex-Officio, Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, called for greater accountability, responsible governance, and increased voter awareness ahead of future elections.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting what he described as a growing disconnect between government policies and the realities faced by residents, businesses, and investors in Lagos State.
A major concern highlighted in the statement is Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenge. Ewenla said stable power supply remains critical to economic growth, job creation, and overall quality of life, but noted that current conditions fall short of expectations.
He referenced campaign promises made by Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 elections, particularly commitments to improve electricity supply nationwide.
According to him, many communities still experience limited and inconsistent power, in some cases receiving fewer than five hours daily.
The statement also pointed to what it described as contradictions in government practice, noting that many public institutions rely on alternative energy sources such as solar power, while individuals and businesses face regulatory hurdles and additional costs to adopt similar solutions.
The continued instability in power supply, he argued, has increased the cost of living and placed pressure on small and medium-scale enterprises, many of which depend on generators or alternative energy to operate.
He added that unreliable electricity discourages both local and foreign investment, posing a risk to the economic strength of Lagos State as the country’s commercial hub.
Ewenla urged Nigerians to take a more active role in the electoral process, stressing the importance of evaluating leaders based on performance, competence, and accountability.
He said growing dissatisfaction among citizens underscores the need for greater civic responsibility, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
The PDP chieftain emphasized that governance should be people-centered, transparent, and responsive, adding that policies should not place additional burdens on citizens already grappling with economic challenges.
He called on government at all levels to address structural issues in the power sector and align policy decisions with the needs of the population.
Political observers say such statements reflect increasing political discourse ahead of the next election cycle, with parties positioning themselves on key issues including infrastructure, economic management, and public service delivery.
