2027 Elections: Makinde Engages Stakeholders, Keeps Cards Close

…Says emerging contenders yet to get his backing, announcement due in May

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has disclosed that consultations are ongoing ahead of the 2027 elections, noting that a number of potential frontrunners have emerged in the process, even as he insists that no endorsement has been made.

Makinde said he has been engaging extensively with elders, religious leaders, and other critical stakeholders as the state moves closer to taking a decision on its future leadership.

According to the governor, while several individuals have surfaced as leading contenders, he has not revealed his preferred candidate, describing reports suggesting otherwise as false.

He added that the consultation process will be concluded by the end of the first week of May 2026, after which his position will be made public.

The governor acknowledged increasing public interest in the succession process, stating that he does not take lightly the trust reposed in him by residents who are awaiting his direction.

Speaking on the broader political climate, Makinde expressed appreciation for the support and goodwill messages he has received, urging citizens to extend their prayers and encouragement to Oyo State and Nigeria, particularly during the ongoing transition period.

On party matters, he explained that the next step would depend on the expected ruling of the Supreme Court concerning the Peoples Democratic Party, assuring that the government would communicate its position clearly once the judgment is delivered.

Makinde also highlighted steps taken by his administration to ease economic pressures, including the approval of an additional ₦10,000 monthly allowance for civil servants for three months, starting from April 2026, to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.

He added that efforts are ongoing to provide support for small businesses, artisans, and other players in the private sector.

Reaffirming his commitment to governance, the governor said his actions would continue to be guided by the best interests of the people of Oyo State, with a focus on clarity, responsibility, and sustainable progress.
