2027 Polls: Afenifere Warns Politicians Against Violence

…Demands urgent action from governors, pushes restructuring, peaceful electioneering

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has called on political actors across Nigeria to embrace peaceful conduct as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

This formed part of resolutions reached at the group’s caucus meeting held on Tuesday at the Akure residence of its leader, Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti.

The communiqué was issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Jare Ajayi.Afenifere emphasised that electioneering campaigns must be devoid of violence, thuggery and character assassination, urging politicians to act responsibly in the interest of national stability.

The group expressed deep concern over rising insecurity, particularly in Yorubaland, and called on South-West governors to take decisive steps to address the situation.

It recommended strengthening regional security outfits, improving surveillance systems and accelerating efforts toward establishing state police.

The organisation also urged closer collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta, citing shared security challenges and cross-border criminal activities.Afenifere acknowledged steps taken by the Federal Government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including recent engagements with security chiefs.

It also commended the efforts and sacrifices of the Nigerian military and other security agencies in combating insecurity.

The group, however, stressed the need to further equip security forces, boost morale and adopt both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.

It also called for vigilance within local communities, warning that internal collaborators are contributing to ongoing security challenges.

Reiterating its long-standing position, Afenifere renewed its call for restructuring, describing it as essential to achieving a more functional and equitable Nigeria.

The group noted its alignment with the federal government’s vision of national renewal and urged concrete steps toward restructuring.

The caucus also announced plans to celebrate the 100th birthday of its leader, Chief Fasoranti, on May 11, 2026, with invitations extended to governors and prominent Nigerians.

Afenifere expressed condolences to victims of terrorism across Yorubaland and Nigeria, urging authorities to act swiftly to end what it described as an alarming wave of violence.

The meeting, which drew members from Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Kwara, Kogi, Osun and Ondo states, was presided over by Olu Falae, chairman of Afenifere’s Executive Committee.
