Justice For Michael Lasisi: A Call For Accountability Aand Transparency in the Nigerian Police Force|Amb. Adedipe
On the 4th of June, 2025, tragedy struck in Abule Oki, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State, when Inspector Ayeni Adeolu, an officer reportedly serving with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allegedly shot and killed an unarmed civilian, Mr. Michael Lasisi, in cold blood.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, Inspector Ayeni was at a local beer parlour, drinking heavily, when the incident occurred. Mr. Lasisi, a well-known and responsible family man, was said to be playing and chatting with friends nearby when the officer, allegedly unprovoked, claimed they had not shown him “enough respect.” Enraged, Inspector Ayeni reportedly brandished his service weapon and shot Mr. Lasisi in the chest at close range, killing him instantly.
In a questionable defense, Inspector Ayeni allegedly claimed he had only fired his weapon into the air and that the bullet descended and fatally struck Mr. Lasisi a narrative that defies logic, ballistic science, and common sense. Multiple residents of Abule Oki have attested that Inspector Ayeni has a reputation for intimidating locals with his firearm, especially when under the influence of alcohol. It is said he frequently boasts that “nothing will happen” if he kills someone.
Currently, Inspector Ayeni is being held at the Alabo Police Station. However, there are growing concerns from the victim’s family and the local community that efforts are being made to shield him from justice. There are strong indications that some of his colleagues are attempting to cover up the incident and downplay the severity of his actions.
Mr. Michael Lasisi was more than just another citizen he was a husband, a father, and a hardworking man whose life was unjustly taken. His grieving wife has cried out, demanding that her husband’s death not be swept under the rug like that of an animal. She, along with many in the community, is calling for justice, accountability, and the immediate prosecution of Inspector Ayeni.
This case is not just about one man it is about a broader issue of police brutality and misuse of power by those entrusted with protecting the public. It is imperative that the Nigerian Police Force and the EFCC demonstrate integrity by ensuring that Inspector Ayeni faces the full weight of the law. Justice delayed is justice denied.
We call on the Inspector General of Police, the EFCC leadership, human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the general public to stand with the family of Michael Lasisi and demand:
- An immediate and transparent investigation into the shooting.
- The suspension and prosecution of Inspector Ayeni under due legal process.
- Full public disclosure of the findings of the investigation.
- Adequate compensation and psychological support for the victim’s family.
Michael Lasisi’s death must not be in vain. Let this be a turning point in the fight against police misconduct in Nigeria. Let justice prevail.
