Flood: Oyo govt, NEMA provide succour worth millions of naira to victims

The Oyo State Government in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency has distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of 2022 flood disaster in the State to ameliorate their suffering.

Speaking at the flag-off of the distribution of relief materials to local government chairmen for onward distribution to vulnerable Indigenes said the government is responding to the needs of the the teeming populace who have been in the recent past traumatized by the prevailing flood hazards in the communities.

Lawal who is the chairman of the task force on Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) noted that the present administration is committed to effective operation of the state agency to boost the resilience of the state to disaster risks.

According to him, Governor Seyi Makinde has graciously approved procurement of two new Hilux vehicles for smooth operations of the agency.

Lawal added that today’s exercise is a function of necessity to assuage the the affected people and prevent secondary disasters that would aggravate further deprived livelihoods and create poverty among the people.

In his remark, the representative of Director general of National Emergency Management Agency, Mr Olanrewaju Kazeem appealed to the state government to create in earnest of the local emergency committee in giving data level of damages at the local level inorder to have the real disaster management at the local level.

Delivering his welcome address, the secretary, Oyo State Emergency Management Authority, Femi Opatumbi said the event is borne out of the decisive, timely response and collective will of the present administration to always cater for the welfare of the citizenry.

The event had in attendance, elected local government chairmen and chairpersons, Commissioner for local government and Chieftaincy Matter, Hon Olasunkanmi Olaleye, traditional rulers from Ibadan, Oke Ogun and Ogbomoso among and representative of National Emergency Management Agency.
