World Cup Qualifier: “It’s not just about football” – Super Eagles captain Musa says ahead of play-off showdown with Ghana

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has said the two-legged World Cup playoff tie against Ghana isn’t just about football, noting that the rivalry between both West African nations touches other aspects of life.

Nigeria and Ghana will faceoff on March 25 and 29th with a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on the line.

Debates on which country has the better jollof rice, better music and actors have been on on social media for years. Musa feels the two-legged tie will be an opportunity for Nigeria to prove her supremacy and hopes they can make the nation proud.

“It’s not just about football,” Musa told NFF TV. “It’s about politics, it’s about jollof, Nigeria-Ghana, about music, acting, everything, and football has brought us again together to show who’s the king. I know we’ll do our best to make Nigerians proud.

“It’s a fight in and outside the pitch. We know that this game is not going to be very easy, so we just have to give all we have in the first game before we come back home.”

Defender Calvin Bassey shared Musa’s sentiments on the importance of the game. “It’s a massive game of course,” Bassey, who plays club football for Rangers in Scotland, said. “We are just focusing. We know they are a good team but we also have good players. It’ll be a good match and hopefully we can get halfway there.”

Nigeria and Ghana will square off in Kumasi, Ghana on the 25th before the return leg in Nigeria four days later.
