Workers’ Day: Adeoye Hails Lagos Workers as Backbone of Economy, Seeks End to Poor Pay, Harsh Working Conditions

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Prince Laja Adeoye, has saluted workers across the state on the occasion of the 2026 International Workers’ Day, praising their resilience and contributions to the growth of the state’s economy.

In a goodwill message released on Thursday, Adeoye described workers as the “backbone” of Lagos, acknowledging the roles of civil servants, artisans, professionals, and players in the informal sector in sustaining what he called Africa’s most dynamic economy.

He specifically commended traffic managers, teachers, healthcare workers, and administrative officers for their commitment to service, noting that their efforts continue to drive development in the state.

Adeoye, who is aspiring to contest the 2027 governorship election under the PDP, said his vision is to build a system where workers are valued and adequately rewarded.

According to him, “The current system has left too many workers overworked, under-rewarded, and undervalued. That must change with purposeful leadership.”

The governorship hopeful outlined a series of reforms he intends to implement if elected, including improved wages, better welfare packages, and enhanced working conditions for workers in the state.

He pledged to introduce a comprehensive salary review to reflect the rising cost of living, alongside regular promotions, performance-based incentives, and allowances for frontline workers.

Adeoye also promised reforms in workers’ welfare, including improved health insurance, affordable housing schemes for civil servants, and strengthened pension systems to ensure a dignified retirement.

In addition, he highlighted plans for capacity building and digital transformation within the civil service, aimed at improving efficiency, reducing bureaucracy, and creating opportunities for career advancement.

On workplace conditions, Adeoye assured that his administration would enforce strict safety standards, tackle workplace harassment, and establish an independent ombudsman to address workers’ grievances.

He further emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, promising regular engagement with labour unions and civil service associations to ensure workers’ input in policy decisions.

Adeoye called on workers to use the occasion of Workers’ Day to renew their commitment to fairness, justice, and shared prosperity.“Together, we can build a Lagos where hard work is rewarded, public service is a source of pride, and every worker can live with dignity,” he said.

International Workers’ Day is celebrated annually on May 1 to recognise the contributions of workers and promote their rights and welfare.
