Oyo Govt Strengthens Partnership on Afforestation and Gender-Based Inclusion in Environmental Practices
The Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible forestry practices as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable resource management across Oyo State.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, while receiving the Oyo State Sawmillers and Timber Contractors Association at the Ministry, said there is a need to strengthen environmental compliance and sustainable forestry practices.
The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the presence of a well-structured and functional association, noting that organized unions play a vital role in promoting orderliness, discipline, and effective communication with government authorities.
He emphasized that such collaboration is essential for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and fostering sustainable industry practices.
Aderinto reiterated that tree planting remains a core priority of the Ministry, stressing that environmental stewardship, particularly afforestation, is critical to maintaining ecological balance and supporting the state’s long-term development agenda.
He noted that true development extends beyond infrastructure to include the preservation and regeneration of natural resources for future generations.
Drawing from his background as an engineer into construction management, Engr. Aderinto expressed concern over the indiscriminate felling of trees, especially the harvesting of immature timber.
He strongly condemned the practice, describing it as harmful to both the environment and public safety, adding that the use of such timber in construction could compromise structural integrity and endanger lives.
The Commissioner urged members of the association to uphold professionalism, unity, and strict adherence to environmental guidelines, warning that the actions of a few individuals must not tarnish the reputation of the entire body.
Aderinto also called for stronger cooperation with the Ministry in promoting sustainable forestry practices across the state.Earlier,the President of the Association, Kabiru Olajide, commended the Commissioner for his proactive leadership and dedication to environmental protection.
He assured the Ministry of the association’s continued compliance with environmental laws and regulations, while also seeking government support in improving forest reserves preservation.
The association further expressed its willingness to partner with the government in the production of tree seedlings as part of efforts to support afforestation and sustainability initiatives, noting that the move would significantly contribute to rebuilding depleted forest resources and enhancing environmental resilience across the state.
