Hon. Adebisi Defends Taiye Currency Over Controversial Coronation Song
…As he defends cryptic song at Olubadan’s coronation, says it was a parable rooted in political history
The Deputy Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly and member representing Ibadan South-West Constituency I, Hon. Yusuf Adebisi, has defended his father, popular Fuji musician Akande Adebisi, also known as Taiye Currency, over a controversial song performed at the coronation ceremony of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Taiye Currency’s performance, which included lyrics referring to “using madness to cure madness,” sparked criticism from members of the public who argued that the message was inappropriate for a traditional occasion of such magnitude.
Addressing journalists on the matter, Hon. Adebisi clarified that the lyrics were misunderstood by many.
He noted that the musician deliberately used parables to convey deeper meanings, particularly aimed at those familiar with the political history of Oyo State.
According to the lawmaker, the controversial line referenced a past political crisis involving the impeachment of the then-Governor of Oyo State, now His Imperial Majesty, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who is the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland. Adebisi recalled that Oba Ladoja resisted political pressure and refused to accept the impeachment imposed by powerful interests at the time.
“The song was a reflection and reminder of that moment in our political history, not an insult or a show of disrespect,” Hon. Adebisi stated.
He urged critics not to take the lyrics out of context or personally, describing Taiye Currency as a seasoned performer with over 30 years of experience, who often uses music to pass across important social and political messages through parables.
“I appeal to those who feel offended to understand the intent behind the lyrics rather than focus on the literal meaning. The song was a symbolic reminder of resilience and justice,” he added.
The coronation of Oba Ladoja drew dignitaries from across the country and has been widely celebrated as a historic moment in Ibadanland.
