Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late elder brother, Engr. Sunday Olufunmilayo Makinde, who passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Speaking at a service of songs held at the State Government House Arcade, Governor Makinde described his late brother as a selfless and principled man who always put family above personal ambition.

According to Governor Makinde, his late brother gave up his university education to join the Nigerian Navy, paving the way for their family’s academic success. This selfless act relieved their parents of the financial burden of his education, allowing them to have a better future.

Governor Makinde said his late brother’s legacy extends far beyond his personal achievements.

He was a straight-talking man of principle who always put family above personal ambition. His honesty and integrity inspired Governor Makinde to adopt these values in his own life.

The service of songs was attended by dignitaries, family, and friends who paid their last respects to Engr. Sunday Makinde. Bishop T. B. Adelakun delivered an emotional sermon, urging attendees to live an impactful life and cautioning against reckless living.

The final rites for Engr. Sunday Makinde are scheduled to hold on Friday, February 7.

Governor Makinde called on friends, family, and well-wishers to join him in celebrating the life of his late brother.

In a tribute to his late brother, Governor Makinde wrote: “You walked so I could run. Sundo, it’s hard to believe that I am writing a tribute to you at this time. You left so unexpectedly and suddenly that I am still in shock that you are no more with us.”

“As I stand before you today, I am filled with a mix of emotions – grief, sadness, and gratitude. My eldest brother, Elder (Engr.) Sunday Olufunmilayo Makinde, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will be deeply missed.

“I still remember the day he came back in 1982, and we had to share our dad’s bed. That moment marked the beginning of a bond that would blossom into a lifelong friendship. Little did I know that our time together would be cut short.

“Sundo, as I affectionately call him, was more than just an elder brother; he was my example, my guiding light.

“He showed me that with hard work and determination, I could achieve my dreams. His own exploits broadened my horizons, and his influence shaped my decision to pursue higher education.

“One of the most significant sacrifices Sundo made for our family was giving up his university education to join the Nigerian Navy.

“This selfless act paved the way for our family’s academic success, including mine. His decision to serve the country relieved our parents of the financial burden of his education, allowing us to have a better future.

“Sundo’s legacy extends far beyond his personal achievements. He was a straight-talking man of principle who always put family above personal ambition.

“His honesty and integrity inspired me to adopt these values in my own life. As the voice of reason in our family, he was the binder that held us together.

“As I reflect on Sundo’s life, I am reminded of the importance of living an impactful and fulfilled life. He may be gone, but his memory will remain forever cherished in my heart.

“I love and miss him dearly, and I take solace in the knowledge that he is now at peace.

“The outpouring of support and condolences from friends, family, and well-wishers has been overwhelming. I am grateful for the kindness and sympathy shown to our family during this difficult time.

“As we say our final goodbyes to Sundo, I am reminded of the words of Bishop T. B. Adelakun, who urged us to live an impactful life, cautioning against reckless living, especially for those in positions of privilege.

“May we honor Sundo’s memory by striving to make a positive difference in the world.
