Oyo Police Promote Public Awareness on Electoral Conduct, Road Safety

The Oyo State Police Command has emphasized the need for increased public awareness on electoral conduct and road safety as part of activities marking National Police Day.
Speaking at a sensitization programme held at the State Police Headquarters in Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, described the initiative as a vital step toward strengthening civic responsibility and ensuring public safety.
The programme, themed “Sensitization on Violence, Ballot Snatching and Related Offences,” focused on educating citizens about the consequences of actions that could undermine electoral integrity and disrupt public peace.
The police commissioner noted that the topics were particularly relevant as the country approaches critical stages in its democratic process.
He stressed that adherence to traffic laws is equally important, describing road safety as a collective responsibility necessary for the protection of lives.
Olugbenga reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to effective policing through collaboration, mutual respect, and trust between law enforcement agencies and the public.
He added that sensitization programmes serve as important platforms to empower citizens with the knowledge required to make informed and lawful decisions.
He further encouraged participants to actively engage in the programme and share the information within their communities, noting that collective efforts are essential to building a safer and more peaceful society.
In his remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Adeniran Tella, represented by the INEC Administrative Secretary, Agnes Olutimi, called for intensified public enlightenment on the dangers of ballot snatching, vote-buying, and other electoral offences through sustained media campaigns and community engagement.
He also urged political parties to promote peaceful conduct by avoiding hate speech, properly training their agents, and adhering to established peace accords.
The event was attended by representatives from various groups, including members of the Park Management System, market women, and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
