CP Olugbenga Assumes Office as 49th Oyo Police Commissioner
The new Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has officially assumed office as the 49th Commissioner of Police in the state.
Olugbenga takes over from Assistant Inspector General of Police, Olufemi Haruna, who served as the 48th Commissioner of Police from April 1, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the new Commissioner is a seasoned and distinguished officer whose career in the Nigeria Police Force has been marked by professionalism, dedication, and exemplary leadership.
Olugbenga holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has attended several professional and leadership courses at notable institutions, including the Police Staff College, Jos; Police College, Kaduna; and the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja.
He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and has since served in various operational, investigative, and administrative capacities across states such as Lagos, Abia, Delta, Borno, Kano, Yobe, Oyo, Kogi, and Bauchi.
His previous roles include Officer-in-Charge of Odaliki Police Post, Divisional Crime Officer at Isheri Division, and Divisional Police Officer in several divisions in Delta State.
He also served as Police Component Commander of Operation Zaman Lafia in Borno State.
In addition, he held positions as Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Oyo State, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).
A pioneer member of the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja, Olugbenga is affiliated with several professional bodies and has received commendations for bravery, effective leadership, and strategic crime prevention, particularly in conflict-prone areas.
Outside his professional duties, he enjoys writing, dancing, reading, and counselling.
The Oyo State Police Command expressed confidence that his leadership will further strengthen security, enhance public trust, and promote proactive policing across the state.
