Oyo Government Issues Urgent Heatwave Advisory as Temperatures Hit 41°C

The Oyo State Government has issued an urgent environmental health advisory following a severe heat stress alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, warning residents to take immediate precautions as temperatures rise to dangerous levels.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, stated that the ongoing heatwave is not limited to the state but is part of a broader nationwide temperature surge affecting multiple regions across Nigeria.

He noted that daytime temperatures have climbed as high as 41°C, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, especially during the peak of the dry season.

Aderinto urged residents to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures to protect their health.

He advised limiting outdoor activities, particularly between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. when temperatures are at their highest. For those who must go outside, he recommended staying under shade, especially beneath trees, to minimize heat exposure.

He emphasized the importance of proper hydration, encouraging residents to drink at least two to three litres of water daily, even when not thirsty, and to consume water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables to help regulate body temperature.

The commissioner also recommended wearing light, breathable clothing and using protective items like hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses.

He added that maintaining proper ventilation in homes and workplaces is crucial to reducing indoor heat buildup.

In addition, Aderinto warned against leaving children, elderly individuals, or pets inside parked vehicles, stressing that temperatures inside cars can quickly rise to life-threatening levels within minutes.

Residents were further advised to watch for early symptoms of heat stress, including dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and convulsions, and to check on vulnerable neighbours who may need assistance.

Beyond immediate precautions, Aderinto highlighted the environmental impact of the heatwave, urging citizens to preserve green spaces and participate in tree-planting efforts to help mitigate long-term heat effects.

He reassured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, promising timely updates as weather conditions continue to evolve.
