Oyo Govt Trains Medical Store Officers on IPSAS,Calls for Greater Accountability
The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the Office of the Accountant General, has organised a one-day training programme for Medical Store Officers under the Oyo State Hospitals Management Board (OYSHMB), aimed at strengthening accountability and improving financial reporting in the health sector.
The training, which focused on the adoption and implementation of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), was held at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Health, Secretariat, Ibadan.
Speaking at the opening session, the Chairman of OYSHMB, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, called on Medical Store Officers across the state to uphold high standards of accountability in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasised that effective store management plays a critical role in financial transparency, noting that all items in the store represent public funds.
Dr. Fagbemi commended the Medical Store Officers for suspending their industrial action towards the end of last year, describing the decision as a show of commitment and patriotism, especially during the critical ember period.
He also praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support towards ensuring sustainable healthcare delivery in Oyo State, adding that the administration remains committed to capacity building within the health sector.
The OYSHMB chairman further encouraged the officers to embrace continuous training and retraining programmes in order to remain conversant with global best practices.
He likened the role of Medical Store Officers to that of accountants in the public service, stressing their importance in safeguarding government assets.
Earlier, the facilitator of the programme, Mr. Oja Sunkanmi, urged participants to demonstrate dedication and transparency by properly documenting and disclosing government properties under their care. He advised the officers to deepen their knowledge of the State Procurement Act and Financial Regulations to enhance efficiency in their daily operations.
The training was attended by Medical Store Officers from health facilities across the state’s five geopolitical zones—Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, Oyo and Ibarapa—as well as officials from the Directorate of Administration and Supplies of the Board.
