Impeachment: Allegations Leveled Against Fubara, Deputy By Rivers Assembly Emerge

The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, accusing them of gross misconduct and a series of constitutional breaches.

NationalDailyNews.com.ngreports that the tension gripped the River State legislature as lawmakers read out formal allegations against both the governor and his deputy during plenary at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.

Presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the plenary saw the Majority Leader, Major Jack, outline seven counts of alleged gross misconduct against Governor Fubara, citing Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.

According to Jack, the allegations include:

Demolition of the Assembly Complex

Extra‑budgetary spending

Withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission

Refusal to comply with Supreme Court rulings on the financial autonomy of the House

Jack noted that 26 members of the House signed the impeachment notice.

After presenting the allegations, the Speaker said the impeachment notice would be formally served to Governor Fubara within seven days.

Following the notice against Fubara, the Deputy Leader of the Assembly, Linda Stewart, brought forward a separate notice of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

Stewart’s motion outlined several allegations, which included:

Reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds

Obstruction of the House of Assembly from performing its constitutional duties

Conniving to allow unauthorised persons to occupy government offices without proper screening

Approaching another group for budget approval instead of the legitimate Rivers State House of Assembly

Seizing salaries and allowances accruing to the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Assembly Service Commission.
