Oluyole LG flags off 5-day Father Christmas funfair as Olatunji assures of safety measures
Oluyole Local Government area of Oyo state has flagged off a five day Father Christmas funfair with parents and children ecstatic over the event which has set the groundwork for an end of year celebration aimed at bringing joy to families.
The event, which officially commenced on Monday, December 16, was unveiled by the executive chairman of the LG, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, at the Council secretariat amid colourful displays, music and the laughter of excited children who trooped in from different communities within Oluyole.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Olatunji said the funfair was designed as a deliberate effort to spread happiness, strengthen community bonds and give children a memorable festive experience despite prevailing economic challenges.
According to him, the yuletide season should be a time of hope and shared joy, especially for young people who often feel the impact of hardship more directly.
“This season reminds us of the importance of togetherness and compassion. We felt it was necessary to create a space where children can laugh freely, families can relax, and the community can reconnect. Even in difficult times, moments of joy matter,” Olatunji said.
He noted that the five day programme would feature a range of activities tailored mainly for children, including games, talent displays, music performances, face painting, gift sharing and appearances by Father Christmas.
He added that local entertainers and small scale vendors were also engaged to ensure the funfair doubles as an economic boost for residents.
The council boss stressed that the initiative aligns with the local government’s commitment to people focused governance in line with the vision of governor Seyi Makinde.
He explained that development is not only about infrastructure but also about creating social moments that build trust and happiness within various communities.
Parents and guardians who attended the opening ceremony expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a thoughtful intervention at a time when many families are cutting back on non essential spending.
One of the parents, who simply identified as Mrs Victoria Adeoye, said the funfair offered her children an experience she might not have been able to afford otherwise.
“Seeing them this happy means a lot to us as parents. It shows that the Olatunji led government is always thinking about ordinary people and our children,” she said.
Traditional leaders and community stakeholders present at the event commended the local government for initiating a tradition of festive engagement, urging other councils to adopt similar efforts that bring governance closer to the grassroots.
Speaking further, the Council boss assured residents that adequate security and safety measures had been put in place throughout the duration of the event adding that health officers and volunteers would be on ground daily to attend to any emergencies.
The Father Christmas funfair is scheduled to run for five days, with different activities holding daily from morning till evening while the grand finale will hold on December 19 with a Carnival and Talent Hunt game.
He added that the grand finale will also feature special performances, free gifts for children and a thanksgiving session to round off the celebration.
