“Monarchy More Demanding Than Governance”— Oba Ladoja

…As Monarch calls for constitutional roles for traditional rulers during visit by Lagos royal.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has said that occupying the throne of a traditional ruler is more challenging than serving as a state governor.

The monarch made the remark on Monday while receiving the Oniru of Iruland, Lagos State, Oba Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.

The statement was released and signed by the Media to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko.

Oba Ladoja, who served as governor of Oyo State between 2003 and 2007, explained that unlike government officials who wield coercive powers backed by state authority, traditional rulers operate without such instruments.

He noted that monarchs also lack clearly defined funding structures, a challenge not faced by government administrations.

He emphasized the need for constitutional roles for traditional rulers, stressing their closeness to grassroots communities and their influence on local governance.

According to him, the expectations of the people concerning the Olubadan stool are significantly high due to its wide jurisdiction.

“This is why we think outside the box in order not to let our people down,” the Olubadan stated.

Oba Ladoja also reminisced about his years on Lagos Island, describing his time in the state as memorable and impactful.

Earlier, the visiting monarch, Oba Lawal Omogbolahan himself a former Lagos State Commissioner, praised the Olubadan for his leadership qualities and reflected on the unique experiences of transitioning from public office to traditional authority.

Among those present to receive the Oniru were the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli; former Senate Leader and Agbaakin Olubadan, Chief Teslim Folarin; along with other chiefs and aides who accompanied the visiting monarch.
