Oba Abimbola Challenges Younger Generation to Embrace Ibadan’s Historical Values

His Royal Majesty, Oba Tajudeen Abimbola, has emphasized the critical importance of understanding history as a foundation for shaping a better future.
Speaking at the launch of his two new books, Ibadan Hegemony and Giant Strides, the monarch highlighted the need to document authentic accounts of Ibadan’s past to guide and inspire future generations.
Addressing the gathering, Oba Abimbola described the launch as a personal and communal achievement.
“It gives me great fulfillment to stand here not only as a royal father and guardian of our traditional heritage but also as an author who has painstakingly documented thoughts and experiences for generations yet unborn,” he said.
He stressed that age is no limitation to scholarly achievement and that dedication, focus, and perseverance make such feats possible.
Oba Abimbola, a social media enthusiast, also expressed concern over the spread of misinformation online, noting the importance of accurate documentation. Quoting former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, he said, “The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”
He explained that his books aim not only to inform and enlighten but also to spark discussions that inspire positive change.
Ibadan Hegemony explores the legacy and gallantry of Ibadan’s progenitors, tracing the city’s traditional leadership from Lagelu Oroapata Ma’ja, Oderinlo, Ibikunle, Iba Oluyole, Aare Latoosa, Efusetan Aniwura, to modern figures like Sanusi Adebisi Idikan and Salami Agbaje.
The book highlights the ingenuity of Ibadan’s political system, its role as a cultural and economic hub, and seeks to inspire the younger generation to uphold the dignity, bravery, and values of their forebears.
Giant Strides, partly an autobiography, recounts Oba Abimbola’s early life, ancestral history, and experiences with notable figures.
The book also celebrates local heroes, highlighting their gallantry, patriotism, and contributions to Ibadan.
One story, Agbeni, tells of the author’s ancestor, a warrior and Ifa priest, shedding light on Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.
The monarch acknowledged the support of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) for providing materials, editorial teams for their assistance, and Governor Makinde and Oba Ladoja for attending and endorsing the event.
He described the books as a legacy of knowledge, meant to educate, inspire, and encourage younger generations to strive for excellence and leave meaningful contributions to society.
Oba Abimbola, however, encouraged Ibadan enthusiasts, lovers of knowledge, and emerging leaders to read the books, emphasizing that they serve as a reminder of the city’s rich history and the exceptional individuals who shaped its past.
In his remarks, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde posited that the books would enrich the knowledge of the people and serve as a guide for future generations.
The Governor praised the people of Ibadanland for valuing Western and other forms of education as a means of advancing their community.
He encouraged individuals with valuable experiences to document their stories and demonstrated his support by donating #10 million to the author.
In his address, The Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, ARUSA 1, described Oba Ajibola as a childhood friend and urged residents of Ibadan and beyond to support the author .
The event, attended by His Excellency, Governor Abiodun Oluseyi Makinde; the Deputy Governor; His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja Arusa I, the Olubadan of Ibadanland; the Chief Judge of Oyo State; the Speaker of the House of Assembly; and other government functionaries, traditional chiefs, and members of the press, provided a platform to celebrate Ibadan’s rich history and heritage.
