Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has officially flagged off its 2025 Ember Month Safety Campaign, aimed at reducing road crashes and promoting safety awareness across the state.

The campaign, which kicked off with a roadshow through major routes including Bodija, Ojoo, Sango, Apata, Challenge, Beere, and Iwo Road, featured sensitization activities conducted in major Nigerian languages to reach a wide audience.

Speaking during the flag-off, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), emphasized that the Ember months traditionally associated with an increase in road accidents, should not be treated as extraordinary periods but rather as times to reinforce road discipline and safety consciousness

“In road traffic management, after engineering comes enlightenment,” Adekoya stated.

“Once we have educated and advocated for safe driving, the next step is enforcement. We will continue enforcing traffic laws without relenting, but we also urge motorists to develop self-discipline.”

The Chairman cautioned motorists against reckless driving, overspeeding, and vehicle neglect, noting that safety begins with personal responsibility.

He also reminded drivers and commuters of the importance of obeying all traffic and environmental laws to ensure a peaceful and joyous Christmas and New Year celebration.

Adekoya further announced the deployment of Breathalyzers across the state to help detect drivers under the influence of alcohol.

“If you want to drink, don’t drive. And if you must drive, don’t drink,” he warned.

“The Breathalyzers will assist us in identifying intoxicated drivers so that appropriate advice or actions can be taken.”

As part of the campaign, OYRTMA also distributed reflective jackets to drivers, particularly those who operate early in the morning or late at night, to enhance visibility and prevent accidents.

The Chairman further urged all motorists to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and to avoid overspeeding, stressing that with collective responsibility, the state can record a crash-free festive season.
