Makinde Flags Off Digital Training for 18,000 Teachers in Oyo State

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has launched a large-scale teacher training programme aimed at equipping 18,000 primary and junior secondary school teachers across the state with modern digital teaching tools and methodologies.

The programme, which was officially flagged off on Tuesday at Emmanuel College, Agbowo, Ibadan, also included the distribution of instructional materials and tablet devices pre-loaded with teaching resources. Represented by Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde stated that the initiative aligns with the state’s drive to modernize its education sector and meet global standards.

“We all know this is a digital age, and we cannot afford to be analogue,” said Lawal. “These tablets will further enhance the instructional capabilities of our teachers. Every one of the 18,000 teachers in Oyo State will receive one.”

The intervention is facilitated through the Global Partnership in Education programme, sponsored by the World Bank, and implemented in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The training is scheduled to last two weeks, with additional oversight to ensure teachers can use the devices effectively. Each tablet is equipped with subject-based apps and lesson plans designed to streamline classroom teaching and reduce the need for manual note preparation.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Intervention, Chief Suraj Abiodun Tiamiyu, highlighted that training sessions are being held in 16 centres statewide, led by academic experts from universities within Oyo State.

“This intervention has two components – distribution of 18,000 tablets and a structured four-week training programme. We’ll also monitor weekly reports to ensure the tools are used in line with the state curriculum,” Tiamiyu said.

Chairman of Oyo SUBEB, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, described the initiative as a critical step in enhancing teaching delivery, noting that the devices are part of a broader digital learning strategy.

“Teachers can now access ready-made lesson plans and deliver more effective teaching. It’s a leap forward from analogue teaching methods,” Adeniran said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Olufisayo Fajuyigbe, expressed gratitude on behalf of the teachers, commending the state government for its continued investment in education and promising improved dedication to teaching.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the South-West Director of UBEC, Mr. Alabi Baba-Asaju; Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola; and Chairperson of Oyo TESCOM, Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, among others.
