The Fulani community in Oyo State has reaffirmed its commitment to safety, security, and peaceful coexistence in the state.
Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Yakubu Bello, made this assurance in response to recent raiding, arresting and charging of some herders and their cattle in some parts of the state.
Alhaji Bello, who said leaders of cattle rears in the state were not notified before the action were taken, called on government to intervene and prevent future occurrences.
He suggested including representatives of cattle rearers in the Rule of Law Enforcement Committee, emphasizing that an all-inclusive committee is key to maintaining peace in the state.
Liaison Officer of Miyetti Allah, Oyo State chapter, Mr. Adam Abdukadir, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence that the state government would engage all parties in finding a favorable solution.
However, legal luminary Waheed Olajide, criticized the Oyo State Anti-Grazing and Rearing of Animals Law 2019 and the Rule of Law Enforcement Committee.
He argued that the law’s consequences disproportionately affect herders and that excluding them from the committee is biased.
Olajide advocated for more comprehensive legislation that covers all aspects and strengthens institutions rather than individuals.
