Makinde’s wife reiterates commitment towards widow’s empowerment, innovation to overcome challenges
Wife of Oyo state governor Engineer Tamunominini Makinde has said that the present administration is committed to constantly empowering widows and seeking innovative solutions to help them overcome challenges confronting them and enable them to live a better life.
Mrs Makinde stated this at an event organized to commemorate this year’s International Widows Day which is being celebrated June 23rd of every year, the theme for the 2023 Widows’ Day is “Innovation and Technology For Gender Equality” held Oyo state government house Agodi, Ibadan.
She lamented that though widows face many challenges including economic vulnerability, social exclusion and a lot of inheritance rights which make it difficult for them to rebuild their lives after the death of their husbands.
Mrs Makinde admonished widows across the state take control of their lives by improving themselves through the acquisition of simple technological skills and mobile phone transactions skills.
She further urged widows to embrace computer and digital literacy for better living.
She said: “In line with the 2023 theme, we plan to enhance women and widow computer literacy in our programmes through training programmes, show them how to operate POS machines and e payment platforms.”
“This training would make them conduct transactions effectively, keep part of their money, avoid fraud, computer literacy and digital platform that provides widows access to education, healthcare and financial resources.”
“Computer literacy can also give them the opportunity to access to legal services information which can help them to protect their inheritance and property right.”
Highlights of the event, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde distributed food items to the widows’ which include; Rice Beans, Groundnut oil and cash gift.
